CITP Spotlight: Qianyi Sun – International Sales Representative

Earned her elite CITP®|FIBP® designation: Jan. 2021

Qianyi Sun’s innate flair for connecting with people is perfectly in synch with her career choice. Her decision to become an international sales representative stemmed from an enduring interest in working with clients from all around the world and helping them address their specific requirements. Qianyi currently works in the seafood industry and gets to promote and ship seafood products locally and internationally—a role she thoroughly enjoys. 

A memorable professional and personal experience 

Originally from China but presently based in Canada, Qianyi doesn’t get to meet her family back home often enough. It was therefore a happy coincidence when she did her first trade show in Qingdao, China. The business opportunity doubled up as an occasion to reunite with her family after many years and makes for one of her favourite career stories. 

“I didn’t get to see my family for a few years, and with this business opportunity was able to conduct business and see my family. This was a very memorable trip for me. I learned a lot from this experience.”

 

Earning profits for her company, even during the pandemic 

Qianyi’s diligent efforts and sales skills ensured that her company earned 1.5 million USD despite the slump caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The restrictions and limited business resources notwithstanding, Qianyi continued to persevere and maintain profitable relationships with existing customers, along with winning new clients in the process. 

Building trust with the customers needs an investment of time and dedication 

To those beginning their careers in international trade, Qianyi has a valuable nugget of an insight to offer. Making sales is not something that can be achieved instantly and on the go. It is a process that requires a lot of time, concerted effort, and commitment. 

“A piece of advice that I wish I had known before working in international trade is that sales don’t happen overnight. It takes time to develop relationships and build trust/rapport with clients.”

 

To formalize her knowledge, Qianyi signed up for a global trade education, eventually learning the intricacies of international trade with FITTskills training. She found the courses to be practical, hands-on, and very connected to the real world. All the topics covered helped her develop a better understanding of international trade processes and procedures. 

On being asked to name her favourite course: 

Global Value Chain was my favourite FITTskills course because it helped me with the logistics aspects of international trade and informed me of the importance of Incoterms® within the sales process.”

 

A designation that is proof of her achievements 

Not stopping at earning her FITT Diploma in International Trade, Qianyi decided to complete her qualifications with the industry-recognized CITP®|FIBP® designation. She applied for the elite credential because it would be a testimony to her international sales accomplishments and open the doors to brighter career prospects in the future. In January 2021, Qianyi became the proud recipient of the CITP®|FIBP® designation, stating:

“It will allow me to build connections and network with others who also received the CITP designation and motivate me to apply everything I have learned so far to furthering my career in international trade.”
